Chairperson, Department of Anthropology at The University of Delaware

The University of Delaware (UD) invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Anthropology (ANTH). The search committee seeks a dynamic leader, enthusiastic about advancing the prominence of the Department and leading efforts to expand interdisciplinary activities and new areas of research (e.g., human health, human rights and social justice, and cultural heritage studies); contributions to interdisciplinary graduate education; and engaged partnerships across colleges, state, non-profit social service, health/ environment/ food/ cultural professions and industries. The effective start date is August 16, 2020, and Chairs are appointed for renewable terms up to five years.

The Department embraces a holistic approach to anthropology and prides itself on excellence in undergraduate education, with 75 majors and minors, and serving more than 2,000 university students each year through various curricular offers that address the fields of archaeological, biological, social-cultural, medical, and applied/ critically engaged anthropology. The Department is expanding its strengths to challenge students to critically examine issues of diversity and social justice, and to demonstrate that the study of past, present, and future human conditions matter.

Job Description

The Chair will lead a department of 10 full-time faculty and several adjunct faculty members. The faculty is a productive group of engaged scholar-teachers with international reputations. The Department has ongoing connections within and outside of the University community, including UD’s Center for Global and Area Studies, the Joseph Biden School of Public Policy and Administration, the Disaster Research Center, global and public health initiatives in the College of Health Sciences, gender studies, and multiple material culture studies units. Beyond UD, faculty collaborate with state agencies, foundations, and cultural institutions. We seek to strengthen existing and develop new strategic inter-department and interdisciplinary connections within and beyond the University of Delaware.

Candidates must have a record of scholarship commensurate with the rank of full professor (tenured). Demonstrated evidence of academic leadership at the department, college, or university level is preferred; however, an exemplary record of scholarship will be considered in lieu of administrative experience. Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field. We strongly encourage applications from scholars working on contemporary humanitarian, social justice, and environmental sustainability matters in areas such as health, displacement, development, and/or food with a record of outstanding scholarly achievement, commitment to undergraduate education, and a demonstrated commitment to public engagement.
