Qualitative Researcher Sought for Bioethics Research Program: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent experience in bioethics or a social science discipline (anthropology, medical sociology, social psychology, health policy, public health, etc.) Experience in qualitative research is required.
Master’s level candidates will be considered if they have sufficient experience with qualitative research methods. Applicants with clinical, basic science, or legal backgrounds will only be considered if they have had additional training in social science research.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills (in English). Experience with empirical bioethics research, survey methodologies, policy research (particularly issues in biotechnology/genetics), or in archival research is highly desirable. Ability to collaborate in a complex multi-disciplinary environment while working independently is key to success in this position.
Responsibilities: This is a 100% time position, with initial appointment for one year. With successful performance the position is renewable. The incumbent will work under the guidance of P.I. Barbara Koenig, Ph.D. The incumbent oversees research projects, including managing all data collection and compliance with research regulations (such as human subjects protection), conducts interviews, and is a full participant in data analysis and research publications. Possible initial projects include ethical and social issues in genomics of addiction, personalized medicine, and/or biorespositories research. Compensation will be based on Mayo Clinic guidelines and set by number of years of experience post degree. Participation in teaching is optional.

Fellowships in Tobacco Control Research. The University of California, San
Francisco, Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE) invites
applications for fellowships in policy-relevant, tobacco-control re-search.
Applications are due January 31, 2008, for fellowships beginning July 1,
2008. Fellowships are funded for one or two years and may be extended. The
CTCRE represents a partnership between UCSF faculty and the Tobacco Control
Archives (TCA) housed in the Kalmanovitz Library. The CTCRE offers two
research programs. Postdoctoral trainees will receive an annual salary
commensurate with their experience, approximately $37,000-$51,000, according
to the NIH stipend scale. These positions are supported by an R25T NIH
training grant and applicants should be eligible for funding from the
National Institutes of Health; citizens or noncitizen nationals of the U.S.,
or lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Postgraduate trainees will
receive an annual salary commensurate with their experience and subject to

The program
The program is a collaboration between Ghana Health Services (GHS), the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Ghana and the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center (RUNMC), University of Amsterdam, and ErasmusMC (all in The Netherlands), and funded by the Dutch funding body Science for Global Development (NWO/WOTRO). The program aims to design and evaluate interventions to stimulate enrolment in mutual health organisations (MHO), with special focus on the poor, and consists of three related projects. Project 1 analyses the impact, costs and process of problem solving programs to remove barriers to enrolment at the level of the community, MHO and health provider, in a cluster-randomised trial. Project 2 analyses the impact and costs of different approaches to identify the poor in order to target premium exemptions, in two different communities. In addition, project 3 evaluates the impact of enrolment on health care utilization, with special reference to the poor, in a cross-sectional analysis. All projects are carried out in both rural and urbanized communities in Ghana. The PhD researcher’s task will be to study and report on the above questions by a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have: An MA/MSc/MPhil in a social science discipline and preferably affinity with the field of health and/or health economics. Experience with or knowledge of public health in Ghana. Both qualitative and quantitative research skills and be able to provide evidence of this in earlier work. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. Ability to critically appraise evidence and write reports and manuscripts, and able to provide evidence of this. Excellent communication skills. Good command of English in speaking and writing. Fluency in one of the major Ghanaian native languages. A strong ambition to complete a PhD thesis. A willingness to spend time in the Netherlands;
Responsibilities
The position requires full time committment, will be varied and will require involvement in the full range of activities handled in the project. The work is part of a larger program, and requires intensive interaction with the program leader, and one other PhD researcher in health economics.
You are expected to carry out qualitative and quantitative medical anthropological research in the different projects. More specifically: i) carry out a process-evaluation of problem-solving programs in health insurance in several communities, and contrbute to the implementation of the programs (in project 1); ii) develop community-based measures for identification of the poor and compare these with other (health economic) measures (project 2); and iii) report on this in the international literature. The job will also include certain management tasks. A large part of the assignment will be carried out in Ghana, in combination with regular visits (1-6 months) to ASSR for training and supervision, data analysis, drafting of research papers and writing the dissertation.
The PhD researcher will be offered a four-year scholarship, which is expected to result in a PhD. The candidate commits him/herself to work a minimum of two years in Ghana after the completion of the PhD.
The living allowance for the candidate will be maximally € 1000.-- per month during his/her stay in Ghana and maximally € 1,500.-- per month during their stay in the Netherlands. Travel costs, costs for fieldwork, etc. will be reimbursed.Contact and application

Position Description: We seek a recent Ph.D. to join an exciting collaboration at the intersection of the social studies of science and science and technology (S&T) project evaluation. The person in this two-year position will play a major role in an NSF-funded ethnographic study of innovation and organizational change in two emerging multidiscipline university research centers. The position will also involve participating in mixed-methods evaluations of NSF and NIH-funded cross-disciplinary research initiatives in Delaware. These S&T studies and evaluation activities are complementary efforts to understand the social structure, cultural dynamics, and project management of cross-disciplinary S&T research.The Research & Evaluation Associate will work closely with the project leader and other team members to develop and implement innovative methods of data collection, analysis, and reporting. The Associate will assist in supervising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate research assistants. In addition to co-authoring evaluation reports, the Associate will have the opportunity to co-author research articles based on these projects for peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in science & technology studies, anthropology, sociology, education, evaluation, or a related field. Researcher, Harvard Initiative for Global Health
The Harvard Initiative for Global Health (www.globalhealth.harvard.edu) is seeking a researcher to assist with projects dealing with HIV testing, treatment, and prevention. The researcher will coordinate multi-site operational research projects, provide training and technical assistance to collaborators in selected sites, assist with the organization of workshops, and contribute to data analyses and writing publishable papers.
