Program information:
The University of Montana offers a rigorous and vibrant graduate concentration in applied medical anthropology as part of its M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Students completing this concentration gain the necessary professional skills to successfully conduct quality research on health issues in both academic and applied settings.
Students are broadly instructed in theory and methods in a department that encourages the integration of all subfields of anthropology. Students also develop the skills and experiences that will allow them to apply anthropological knowledge and understanding to contemporary health issues. Qualified students entering the program have the possibility of becoming involved in ongoing faculty research on topics including drug use, reproductive health and fertility, women’s health in Nepal, and the health of migrant farm workers. Focal areas within the curriculum include the anthropology of the body, the experience of illness, culture and healing systems, international health and development, the role of anthropology in public health research, the political economy of health, and health, gender and sexuality.
